12 Days of NNY Christmas

12 Days of NNY Christmas

On Friday we’ll be starting a giveaway here at NNY Life with gifts for the holidays from local north country retailers. There are several reasons I’m excited about this:

It Feels Like We’re a Team

We have represented in this “12 Days of NNY Christmas” giveaway fourteen local businesses, many owned and operated by women. Being a small business owner myself, this group couldn’t be closer to my heart.

By bundling everyone and everything together in one promotion, my hope is that the contest will get a lot of traction in time for a holiday boost in sales, which means a better Christmas and New Year for these business owners and their families (not to mention the folks walking away with these //15// great gifts to share – or keep for themselves).

This Contest is the Work of the New NNY Life Team

NNY Life has been around for just under two years now, but it wasn’t until I decided to ask for help late in the fall of this year that NNY Life began to feel more like something that could be a valuable tool to people in this community, and less like a half-finished project I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to complete.

Though I love to write and am passionate about NNY, I’m not the greatest at self-promotion. With the addition of contributors Katie and Becky (and with more in the works), I feel NNY Life is finally hitting its stride. My hope is that the newbies looking for goodies will stick around to see more about events, local favorites, more fun giveaways, and hopefully a little down the line, some area events for families and kids planned and hosted by NNY Life!

It Seems Like What I’m Doing Matters

The response I’ve gotten since drilling down and consistently posting since late October tells me that local family-friendly events information, weekly local food deals with and without coupons, and information geared at families living in the NNY area is, as I’ve always known, an unmet need.

NNY is a great place to raise a family. My ultimate goal with NNY Life is to make sure everyone who comes to the area can find their place in this community quickly and get on with enjoying all northern New York has to offer.

So, I want to thank the businesses who have contributed goods and services to the 12 Days of NNY Christmas:

I wish Clayton had a gymnasium (sp?) that opened for an hour or two a week for our little ones to release some energy in the winter…I grew up in Fairbanks Alaska and when my son was between 6mo and a year I was there with him…the local gymnasium opened its doors for a nominal fee and had all its mats and foam/pleather objects for the little ones to use…it was a great winter blues buster…also swimming lessions in the winter in clayton ??

    • ktclick

You should definitely call the school and see if they can set something up. Even if none of the schools can help you out, you’d be amazed at what resources you can find by asking someone who is familiar with the area! I bet you could work something out in Clayton. How old are your kiddos?

I wish Watertown had an “indoor’ farmer’s market year round, with all of the local crafters that the regular farmer’s market has. I would rather buy handmade and local than shop on Amazon.

    Great contest Katie!

I think there is an indoor farmer’s market at the Paddock Arcade in the mornings.

    • Kdicksonfrontporch

Yes, there is a market on Wednesdays in the Paddock Arcade until Christmas.

    • Hmarshall

They have one October to December, Wednesday’s in the Paddock Arcade.

Would love to see a Barnes & Noble in Waterotwn!
@Patty – There is a new store that just opened at the Salmon Run Mall called Popcorn & More. They have a nice selection of books and toys for young children (and the popcorn is good too!). The store are located just inside old Borders enterance.

I wish Watertown had a My Gym! I loved taking our son to the one in NH. Great memories and a great way to meet other Moms too.

  • Corrine Contreras

Wouldn’t it be great if Watertown had a carousel at Thompson Park?

  • mari

Wouldn’t it be great if Watertown had a Mexican restaurant ?

  • Kirsten

That sounds like a great idea Amanda!

  • http://profiles.google.com/thecakegirl Denise M

@Jessica while it’s not a huge aquarium there is the Aqua Zoo in AlexBay. Our kids *love* this place better than the giant aquariums. The owners are super sweet and clearly take good care of all their fish :)

  • http://profiles.google.com/thecakegirl Denise M

I would love to see a Rita’s Italian Ice in Watertown!!

  • ktclick

I’d heard of the Aqua Zoo, but have never been up to see it! Do you know if they have a Facebook page or a website?

  • ktclick

I would go! A few places have opened, but none have seen much success. There’s a new place in Carthage that is an Irish/Mexican hybrid. (Interesting, right?) It’s called Jose O’Connors. They have Mexican food specials every now and again. Here’s a link to their Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/jose.oconnors

  • Corrine Contreras

wouldn’t it be great if Thompson Park had a carousel!!!

  • ktclick

You should write them a letter Kristin! There is a local group trying to make this happen, but so far they’ve been greeted only with form letters detailing directions to the locations in Syracuse. It’s hard to explain to outsiders that, for us, that might as well be in another country during the winters when people need lots of books to read!

  • Tina M.

My daughter Erica referred me to your blog!

    • ktclick

Thanks for commenting! I added Erica’s extra five votes!

  • Tina M.

Oh and I think Watertown needs more kid friendly activities! Like a Chuck E Cheese!

  • Emcelatka

I would love, love, love to see a Chic-fil-A! Their food is amazing!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=578632209 Alicia Hollenbeck

I agree with the In Door Water Park idea….I drive through Calcium all the time and always imagine how great it would be to have a Water Park off Rt 342 where there is so much land to build that’s right off Rt 81 and between the action of Watertown and Fort Drum…But I also think it would be a HUGE benefit to have a Toy Museum like Rochester has along with a Children’s book store to encourage development for our future leaders!

  • Hmarshall

The North Country Arts Council at 52 Public Square is a non-profit organization dedicated to the arts. The gallery and store feature locally produced art, artisan jewelry, CD’s and books by local authors.

    Trader Joes!

  • Erica Moulton

I would love to see more Mom & Pops type places…the big stores are nice but there is nothing like locally owned stores to enrich the small town feel that I treasure about this area. Oh and a nice locally owned butcher shop…hint, hint Little Barn Bulk Foods! ; )

  • Tina Monaco

My daughter Erica Moulton referred me.

    • ktclick

Got it! Thanks Erica and Tina!

  • Jdoldo

A Wegmans or a Whole Foods would be great!

  • Nova Schenk

Eating bacon from Little Barn as I type and it is YUMMY! Word around the barn is they are thinking of putting in a zip line/ropes course on their property – now THAT would be awesome!!!

  • Mjhknsjhjhrj

Little Barn bulk foods is an amazing little place… They offer so many unique grocery items and have THE BEST Hot SAUCE collection in town!

  • Mjhknsjhjhrj

It would be great if Watertown had a family friendly indoor/outdoor activity center of some sort….

  • Kathy Snyder

Would love to see a book store also!

  • Becky Taylor

Wouldn’t it be great if Watertown had a kid’s pizza and play place like Chuck E. Cheese!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046950096 Kate Albrecht Fidler

Oh yes, a book store and a second hand sporting goods spot would be excellent!

  • Nadine Britton

I would LOVE to see a bookstore – any larger bookstore – that would offer a GOOD (and less expensive) selection of books for all ages. I’d even prefer it be a local endeavor, but a chain and it’s inventory is hard to compete with.

I would also like to see a place that offered a night out for adults… I have a friend in Rochester area that has a make-your-own pottery place, which has girls night on a particular night of the week, and participants can bring a bottle of wine, and enjoy an evening of friends and crafts… something other than just going to a bar, but being able to enjoy a few adult moments.

  • Kyle B.

I would like a Dave & Busters! My wife Becky referred me!

  • http://www.facebook.com/sheena.lloyd1 Sheena West

Wouldn’t it be great if Watertown had a indoor family center. Somewhere you could take your children to not only play during the cold winters but also somewhere us parents could go and enjoy as well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=559571061 Joanie Baker-Parks

I was just talking with a friend today and we really don’t have any good bookstores here in Watertown. We need a few. Just a thought! :) Happy Holidays! :)

    A seafood specialty store!

  • Amanda

    An amusement park

  • Crtstalmazuera

Wouldn’t it be great if Watertown had an indoor play ground and water park!

    • ktclick

Wouldn’t that be amazing? I think people would travel from Canada and all through the NNY area to go to an indoor water park/play ground here. I’d love to see the City of Watertown, or one of the towns or villages take that on. But right now everyone is still just trying to make room for all the soldiers and their families, so they’re a little preoccupied. 😉

  • Klane803

Wouldn’t it be nice if Watertown had a Wegman’s? :-)

    • ktclick

I actually went on a little letter-writing campaign (okay, it was Twitter) to try and find out some info about a Wegman’s coming to Watertown. It’s been rumored for years. However, they definitively said NO, it won’t happen. :( That was in 2010, so hopefully they’ll start to catch on that a lot of people would shop there!

  • Melissa_ny79

Wouldn’t it be great if Watertown had a Christmas lights display. Then I wouldn’t have to drive to Syracuse! :)

    • ktclick

I agree 150%! I am shocked every year that more neighborhoods in the area don’t decorate their houses. In Oklahoma, all you had to do was drive to the ritziest part of town and there were neighbors competing against neighbors for the best light displays everywhere!

  • B Preston09

It would be great if watertown had a north pole, if even just for the holidays! but a place where you pay and you can have your kids be elfs and make gifts for there family members! i know my daughter would beyond love this and i bet old kids would enjoy taking the tme to make things to! i know at all our christmas parties the adults always love doing the crafts as well!

  • KayD

    Kendall Kinsey sent me!

    • ktclick

Awesome, thanks Kendall! I’ve added her five extra entries!

  • Nychol06

Wouldn’t it be great if watertown had a monkey joes?! It’s an indoor play place filled with the inflatable bounce houses

  • Savanah

Wouldn’t it be great if Watertown had a Mexican restaurant. As well as a chuck e cheese or a place where kids could have birthday parties and fun.

  • Amanda Battista

Wouldn’t it be great if Watertown had a little kids train that parents could ride too around Thompson Park or somewhere; Somewhat like what they have at Old Forge.

  • Melissa Howard

I would love to see Chuck E Cheeses or an indoor water park something for the family to do as a whole.

  • Katie Knight

Wouldn’t it be great if Watertown had a big indoor play place. Including a healthy snack bar and camps during school breaks.

  • Tammy Sawyer

    I WANT!!!!!!!

  • Tboula80

    Tammy Sawyer sent me:o)

  • Aprilb13045

Wouldn’t it be great it Watertown had a major bookstore again? I know already mentioned it but it’s just one of the coziest atmospheres to me. Sitting and reading and getting lost in a book, any book, at your fingertips while sipping a hot coffee. Sounds like heaven to me :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/jessica.d.hall.7 Jessica Delles Hall

    An indoor bounce arena/playground!

  • Erica Moulton

I love the idea of an indoor Farmer’s Market down below! How about a swap like CNY Harvest swap does? You bring homemade goods and swap for other’s homemade goods…it doesn’t have to be food…can be homemade soaps or body scrubs….love!

  • Brandimcarrion

    A chic fil a!!

  • Ciam

    Brandi Carrion sent me here!

  • Shinybubbles79

An indoor waterpark around here would be awesome!!! Or any kind if indoor kids play area. Also a park that was fenced in for little kids would make parents outings the rest if the year much more enjoyable. I have 2 toddlers and bringing them to the playground is crazy!

  • Kristin

I would love to see a My Gym come to Watertown. Great structured physical activities for young children year round. There is one in Dewitt (near Syracuse). We loved ours in NH! (www.mygym.com)

  • Amdewey1234

Wouldn’t it be great if Watertown had volunteer calendar where you could look to get ideas for yourself and your kids to get involved in the community!

  • Kim

Would love to see more indoor activities for families and teens indoors and inexpensive, even FREE to keep everyone busy. I love taking my children to the Hands on Museum in Rochester and even the one in Syracuse. The cost for a days worth of fun is not that bad but the gas and the drive hurts.
