Staying Young Through Rock n’ Roll. Or Something.

Staying Young Through Rock n’ Roll. Or Something.

I have tickets to see the rock band Cold tomorrow night in Watertown.

First of all, I am way too old and have way too many responsibilities on Monday morning to be going to a concert on a Sunday night. Second of all, I’d never heard this band one time in my whole life before I started seeing the concert promoted a few months ago.

This is why I want to go to this concert.

In high school, I considered myself an alternative music aficionado, meaning I read Spin magazine and listened to the Smashing Pumpkins (before Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness) and the Violent Femmes. In college, I was surrounded by much cooler people, and I quickly realized I should keep my mouth shut.

I continue to curtail my music recommendations for the most part (except to my kids – poor souls. All they want is “Wheels on the Bus” but they have to give me a turn of listening to Fiona Apple and Foo Fighters in between Kids Place Live). I’m not claiming to be a rock-n-roll mommy or even particularly musically-inclined.

But, I do really like listening to good live music and am jonesing for some live electric guitar run through amplifiers that would barely fit into my bedroom. I’ve spent one too many summer listening to performances of “Baby I Love Your Way” and “Mustang Sally” sung off-key at lakeside bars to be apprehensive about the quality of Cold’s music. I’m just way too excited they are labeled alternative rock to care.

Before getting married, I went to every concert I could afford. I saw Radiohead in Oklahoma City when they were opening for Big Head Todd and the Monsters. I went to No Doubt, Bush and Goo Goo Dolls just as “I’m Just a Girl” was hitting MTV and Gwen and Gavin were still single. I saw The Flaming Lips back when they were still an OKC band opening for Candlebox. I know. I am totally showing my age. When I tell my 16-year-old sister about these exploits, she looks at me like I should be in a museum somewhere. Maybe she’s right.

I can’t wait to see what I think about Cold tomorrow night. Especially now that I can legally have a beer and know better than to leave home without a pair of earplugs. Just in case.

    OH MY GOSH
I WISH I knew they were coming here! I LOVED them in middle/high school! Year of the Spider was SUCH a good album! A Different Kind of Pain was also fabulous, I thought they broke up after that one?!

You will have SO much fun! I’m going through my desktop computer (circa 2003) right now to see if I still have their music so I can jam & reminisce of the days when I had pink highlights & a hoop in my nose (rather than the tiny little stud you’ve seen!)

    ENJOY!
